All of the characters are interesting and for the most part well developed. They give an excellent performance giving viewers a sense of their personality quirks that can be seen throughout the movie. It’s very easy to feel compassion for them as they struggle with their own personal dilemmas, it’s not long before you genuinely want to root for them, cheering them on through their small victories and big defeats. This includes positive and negative ones. Some of the characters are gritty, while others are clean cut and easy to view as a sympathetic story arc. Some give a glimpse into a live that is a little off the beaten path.
The acting in this movie is outstanding, especially from Miho Kawana who was going through an extremely rough time in real life at the time filming began. She’s never been one to hide her emotions, whether it be from her acting choice or what she feels in life itself, she shares it all without reservation. Her character is one of empathy, knowing when to show strength and when enough has been shed already during the film. I’ll take that over the alternative any day of the week.It’s easy to see why this film won Best Cinematography at the prestigious Golden Ace Awards. They made every scene look as if it were filmed in a single shot, even if it was an ambitious 3-4 minute long scene where there definitely could have been some shortcuts taken. The lighting is great too, it looks like someone lit every scene with only to match light sources with their subject matter. This is particularly true of the first few scenes which look like they were shot in foggy, misty conditions. Just like you’d expect the light to look. It didn’t take over the scene, it enhanced it. The film is one of those that looks better as it goes along, making each scene better than the last or at least more memorable.The only thing that could have been done differently was to show more interaction between some of the characters to let viewers know they were connected in some way besides just being classmates. Some of them have relationships with one another but getting too close would be breaking someone else’s story so there are limits to what can be done within a movie to flesh out every character in a 3-hour film. The film is clearly not finished yet, but it’s already come a long way since it was first released in 2003. It is still available online for free viewing and is worth the watch.
